Google Shows the Future of Browser Games

Earlier today at GDC Europe, which takes place before Gamescom this week in Germany, Google’s new game developer advocate Mark DeLoura and Chrome developer advocate Michael Mahemoff talked about Google’s major entry into the browser game space with its app store for Chrome. Set to launch this October, the store aims to make a proper marketplace for browser games — one that solves a lot of the issues of games on the web today, from discovery to monetization.

First, Mark discussed the benefits of Chrome for browser gaming (mainly its speed) and why developers should be excited about its app store, which you can watch in the video highlight below. After that, we’ll walk you through the rest of their presentation.

After the intro about Chrome and why developers would want to create content for the app store, the two spoke about all of the technologies that will aid developers in making browser-based games and the features of the app store itself.

Mark shows how the store will work. It’ll use Google Checkout to keep purchases simple.

This is what the latest version of what the app store looks like.

This is an individual game page on the store. It’ll have customer reviews and you’ll be able to see your friends’ ratings.

Google explains what it means by web apps.

Google stressed how easy it will be for publishers to publish content via their service. There is no approval process for getting content posted.

Unlike typical digital stores, in which a content publisher usually keeps about 70 percent of the profit, Google isn’t seeking a rev share — only a 5% processing fee. Google will also allow free games, but not games that require you to pay later. It isn’t ready to handle Microtransactions for launch, but will later on (in the meantime gamemakers can use their own solutions).

Google also showed off a flash version of Lego Star Wars.

Google said it’s interested in a lot of classic games — they showed a port of Nethack.

Then Michael Mahemoff came out to talk about developing games using HTML5 and associated technologies.

He talked about how much HTML has evolved; how there are so many more common libraries now.

He also talked about how members of the Google Web Toolkit team did a port of Quake II using HTML5.

Michael then discussed how the web began as sort of a black art, but now lots of libraries are available.

He mentioned Atwood’s Law: “Any application that can be written in JavaScript, will eventually be written in JavaScript.” Essentially, he pointed out that if games can be written for browsers, they will be.

Michael highlighted FreeCiv.net, a multiplayer strategy game playable in a browser.

This was an example of what’s possible with CSS these days; the fail whale demo, in which the Twitter whale was entirely accomplished via CSS.

Another example, this time the game Lemmings accomplished with absolute positioning (!).

Google’s own Pac-Man stunt was done with HTML5.

One of the benefits of browser-based games is that you can easily include web content inside a game, or web-based widgets or modules.

Of course, Google took the opportunity to show off video playing in HTML5.

Google also discussed how Web GL (apps that can take advantage of your computer’s hardware) and C++, a language many developers are already well versed in, being used for browser-based games will be incredibly exciting for the space. Obviously, Google’s presentation was a big pitch for developers to support Chrome and its app store initiative, but it was neat to see just how much is possible via the browser these days. We’ll have further updates on the app store as it nears its launch this fall.

HTC Hero review

HTC Hero review


The HTC Hero has been an object of lust for some time now for gadget enthusiasts. Even from the earliest days of leaked hardware shots and blurry demo videos of its UI, smartphone fans seemed to agree that the company had finally achieved what has been missing in the world of Android. Namely, a polished and attractive device — polished enough to go head-to-head with the iPhone — that kept its open source heart. So, here we are months later with an actual, bona fide Hero in our midst. Yes the reports were true, it is a beautiful device, both inside and out (though of course opinions differ on that chin). But does being a beautiful device mean Android is about to move to a bigger stage? Is HTC’s spit-shine enough to overcome some of the hurdles that have plagued the platform? That question — and more — is answered in the text below, so read on for the full review.

Hardware


Industrial design

In terms of overall design and layout, the Hero is very much a product of evolution. Like its forebears the G1 (or Dream) and MyTouch (or Magic / Ion), the general stats like screen size, technology, and resolution, button placement, unit size and weight, and basic aesthetic are pure HTC. Like those previous devices, the Hero contains a smattering of hardware buttons on the base (or chin as some call it) of the phone, including a home, menu, back, send, end, and dedicated search key. The device also sports a trackball in this area, which shouldn’t surprise any Android aficionados.

Where the Hero breaks from convention, however, is in the overall look and feel of the phone. If the Dream and Magic felt plasticky and cheap (they did), the Hero is quite the opposite — it’s like a solid brick in your hand. The casing is made of a soft-touch material (Teflon on the white version to prevent dirt), and the shape of the device takes a much more severe, almost rectangular slant. The buttons along the bottom are small, evenly spaced ovals (save for the search and back key — we’ll get to that), the earpiece is covered in a stylish mesh, and the volume rocker on the side is a smooth, single button. The screen also uses a new oleophobic treatment (similar to the iPhone 3GS), and thankfully HTC has added a 3.5mm headphone jack to the top of the phone.


Overall the appearance is sleek and modern — it’s like the Magic was beamed to the year 3000 for a redesign. Besides the chin (which some people will nitpick, though we don’t mind), the Hero is a home run when it comes to looks, though it’s not without issues. One of our main gripes with the phone is the layout of the hard buttons. The four across the top don’t bother us much, but the placement of the “back” key is a huge pain. It basically forces your hand into a cramp-inviting position — it’s an unnatural move for a key you’ve got to use a lot. If you’re left handed, it’ll seem fine (great even), but as a righty, we found it inconvenient and uncomfortable. It’s actually perplexing as to why the back button lives where it does on the Hero — the Magic’s placement is much more accessible and a lot more comfortable to use for righties or lefties.

Internals

The guts of the Hero should seem familiar to most gadget buffs — they’re essentially identical to HTC’s Magic (at least the Rogers version). What does that mean for you, end user? It means you’re stuck with the same Qualcomm 528MHz CPU, the same 288MB of RAM, and a paltry 512MB ROM. The onboard radios include WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and a quad-band HSPA cell chip. The model we tested is the European release of the phone, and as such is only able to access EDGE networks here in America. Luckily for us we don’t leave the house much, so most of the time we were on WiFi. So just to be clear, beyond the new screen coating, industrial design, and improved camera, this phone is the HTC Magic inside.

Using a similar smudge resistant material as the iPhone 3GS, it certainly seems to repel oil, though you’ll still find yourself wiping it clean on a regular basis. The 3.2-inch, 480 x 320 capacitive touchscreen works well, but not notably better than its predecessors — in terms of color and clarity, however, the Hero’s LCD is on par with the competition. One nice added feature is a proper light sensor here, so automatic dimming works as it should, whereas neither the Dream nor the Magic can take advantage of the eye- and battery-saving functionality. There’s nothing particularly special about this screen, however we noted a bit less blurring while scrolling through long pages or detailed images, a problem which we’ve been bothered by with the Hero’s Android brothers. One problem that plagued the unit we were testing was screen freeze ups — it just simply wouldn’t accept any input. This seemed to happen mainly on the homescreen, which made us feel like it might be more of a software problem than a hardware issue (we’ll get to that momentarily).

Camera


The Hero’s 5 megapixel camera is pretty darn amazing, we must say. Coming off of most devices with their paltry 3-or-so megapixel entries, it’s a real treat to have an onboard cam which can actually stand in for a proper shooter. While the image quality isn’t up there with dedicated point-and-shoots, it’s certainly leaps and bounds better than the nearest competitor, with near-macro focus length. We take a little bit of issue with HTC’s UI design on the camera app — using the sometimes-slippery trackball for both zooming and snapping shots seems kind of ill-advised to us, though we didn’t have much trouble with it (a toggle to cancel zooming would be nice). As with most phone cameras, the colors weren’t quite as vivid as we would have liked — bright hues somehow came out murky with the Hero — but we weren’t expecting the world here. HTC seems to have tweaked shutter speeds and processing as well, as snapping photos was noticeably faster than on the earlier Android phones, though we still think the iPhone 3GS and Pre feel tighter (of course the Pre doesn’t have to worry about that pesky focusing stuff).

On the other hand, video recording on the Hero wasn’t quite as awesome an experience as still photos were; the maximum resolution is a pathetic 352 x 288, and even at that resolution we experienced noticeable hiccups and stalls in our videos. We’re not asking for much, but we’d at least like some smooth VGA here. If you plan on using this for any kind of decent video — think again.

Speaker

We’re big speakerphone users, so the external audio of a device is actually important to us (besides, how else can we entertain friends with the “Ras Trent” video while out and about?). The speaker on the Hero is definitely up to the task, producing loud and clear audio while on calls or listening to music. Of course, no one is really going to jam this way very much, but at the very least you can make our your tracks pretty clearly. For calls, the speaker and microphone seemed pretty outstanding to us (we were testing mostly with T-Mobile, mind you).

Battery life

We were impressed with the Hero’s staying power, though we’ll reserve our final judgments till we have a device running US 3G to look at. On EDGE / WiFi, we saw impressive, full day use with a single charge. Standby didn’t seem to pull much power, though it was obvious that many of the widget updates were just waiting till we woke the phone up, which made for maddening floods of syncing and updating (a real drain on speed). Overall, the Hero beats the pants off of our G1, and gives the Magic a run for its money. Battery life was favorable in comparison with the iPhone 3GS, and obviously puts the Pre in a world of hurt.

Software


HTC’s take on Android


As you should know, HTC has sunk a huge amount of time (and money, we assume) into giving Android a major makeover. If you’re familiar with the company’s work on Windows Mobile devices, then the look and feel of the new HTC-ified Google OS should make perfect sense to you. Sense is a good word, actually, since the company calls its new UI the “Sense Experience,” which is really another way of distancing itself from TouchFLO iterations of the past (though there is clearly a lineage here).

Essentially, almost every aspect of Android has been reskinned and tweaked on the Hero. From the windowshade notification area to the dialer, HTC has left its mark across the device — and it’s a pretty handsome mark. The general design is much more on par with contemporaries such as the Pre, iPhone, and recent versions of the BlackBerry OS. You probably know what that means: lots of alpha layers, dark, shiny blacks and grays, and the occasional brightly colored highlight hue. It’s all extremely slick — if you didn’t know Android well, you might assume it’s a completely different OS… and maybe that’s what HTC is hoping. We obviously like the reworked graphics, but it’s annoying to see how the fresh paint job bogs the phone down in places. In particular, the calendar app which is fairly nimble on standard builds of Android seems sluggish here, and we noticed the same kind of jittery behavior in other apps which function just fine on our Dreams and Magics.

Two other changes of note are somewhat major in the Hero build of Android. Firstly, as has been widely reported, the phone can access Exchange accounts — a feature not found on any Google-branded devices (though present in the Rogers variations of HTC’s other phones). Secondly, the device has an underlying social networking tie-in (a la webOS) which can pull in Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr data in various spots on the phone, and also allows you to move media and messages between the services.

HTC refinements

What is notable is the fact that the underlying guts here are really no different from Android 1.5, save for some HTC-specific tweaks such as the company’s onscreen keyboard (more on that in a moment), aforementioned dialer, and other nips and tucks, largely cosmetic. For instance, instead of providing a tab to pull up your applications, HTC provides a button reminiscent of the Pre’s home icon (which incidentally does the same thing). Still, there are quite a few functionality tweaks onboard as well, including the addition of multitouch in the Hero’s photo app and standard (but heavily skinned) Android browser. Sorry Google Maps fans — no love on that front.


Google’s touch keyboard has been completely dashed here in favor of HTC’s iteration, and that’s a good thing… to an extent. The keyboard is certainly usable — even good sometimes — but it’s hardly a competitor to Apple’s onscreen QWERTY, and not even in the same universe as a physical keyboard. We know a lot of readers have been on the edge of their seat about whether the Hero’s lack of keys would be a detracting factor, and despite a tremendous attempt by HTC here, it certainly is (of course we feel similarly about the Magic). We found ourselves regularly frustrated by the speed of typing (which can sometimes hang painfully, a la iPhone OS 2.0), and some of the auto-correction, which is typically good, but can be maddening when incorrect. Keep in mind, we really, really wanted to like this keyboard, but the more time we spent with it, the more frustrated we became by it. Trying to tap out an address in Google Maps while walking somewhere, for instance, was a truly unpleasant experience.

On the other hand, HTC has made marked improvements in the phone functionality on the Hero, making the dialer and contact management pages a joy to use. Getting to number quickly is a cinch since you’re able to use the numeric keypad to call up both strings of numbers and names, and the company has forgone tabbed entries on contacts for a combined recent / missed page coupled with your contact list. HTC has also improved the music player here (a badly needed upgrade), though like so many other applications on the phone, it feels sluggish when compared to its rivals’ experiences. We had the same feeling when using the browser — another spot where the software falls victim to the phone’s underpowered hardware — the web experience on the Hero was typically slow and frustrating.

Overall, the changes the company has made with Android do make the OS feel more complete and modern, but it seems to be at the expense of performance. We could almost feel the 528MHz processor struggling to keep us as we paged through seven homescreens of widgets — most accessing data in the background — and when we took at a look at the task list, it was clear that most of our memory was being sucked up with scores of little processes. It seems like HTC has made a software suite for their next generation of phones, but tacked it onto its current one, and the combo is a bit messy at times. We won’t knock them for aiming high, but we don’t know how much we enjoy the lag and stutter of the current Hero build.

Widgets and new applications

HTC has loaded the phone with a slew of new applications and widgets — and the company has made a lot of the right choices. We’ve also felt that one of the really untapped resources Android had was its widget implementation, so it’s really nice to see that HTC has taken up the mantle here. Unfortunately, these aren’t standard Android widgets, so as far as we know, you’re only going to be seeing them on HTC phones.

Of course there are the standard clock and weather widgets (both beautiful, mind you), though the company has provided a number of other options that really do improve the day-to-day use of the phone. We’re not going to run through every single one, but we do want to mention the notable additions.

To start with, HTC has gone to the trouble of creating it’s own Twitter client, Peep. The application lives in two places on the phone; the first is a variable sized widget for your homescreen which allows basic functionality like reading recent tweets and updating your status. The second iteration is a full-on app which offers robust options along the lines of Tweetie for the iPhone. While the application is excellent at what it does, there is some disconnect between the widget and the program itself. Like other parts of the OS, Peep seems to be hampered by the slower CPU and limited RAM as well — scrolling can sometimes be stuttery, and it often takes some doing to refresh its content.

Another notable widget / application combo is Footprints. The premise is simple: it allows you to quickly snap a photo and geotag your location, then gives you options for sorting the content as favorites, restaurants, shopping, etc. It’s actually a pretty clever little idea, and for those who travel or are planning a trip, along with that 5 megapixel camera, it’s a nice addition to the phone.

Interestingly, our favorite widgets are actually simple toggles — switches which allow you to flip services like WiFi, mobile networks, Bluetooth, and Airplane Mode on and off without jumping into your settings screen. During testing, we found ourselves putting these small, icon-sized micro apps into heavy rotation. It’s a thoughtful inclusion which shows HTC is actually paying attention to how users operate their phones.

Flash

So Flash is kind of a big deal on new smartphones. The iPhone doesn’t have it, the Pre doesn’t have it, BlackBerry devices don’t have it… but the Hero does. Unfortunately, in our testing, we found the inclusion actually hurts operation of the phone more than it helps. When browsing to a site heavy on Flash (there are many), the browser loading times were abysmal. Furthermore, trying to view videos in-window produced choppy, nearly unwatchable results. You may have a better experience with lighter kinds of content, but in our opinion the main reason to introduce Flash into a mobile environment is to allow for broader media viewing options, and in the current state of this Flash player, you’re not really going to get much mileage out of it.

Wrap-up


The Hero represents a valiant effort from HTC — though unfortunately, the company appears to have bitten off more than its last-generation hardware can chew. If this build of Android were to be loaded atop the guts of a 3GS or Pre, the performance would likely be astounding, but fused with the two-year old architecture of previous devices, it’s mostly disappointing. We’re not saying this isn’t the best build of Android on the market — we think it is. What we are saying is that this build is a bit too much for a device like the Hero to handle, and that makes for an uneven, sometimes frustrating experience. Going into the review, we desperately wanted to love this phone, but given the combination of a few poor hardware choices and an OS which outclasses the device it runs on, we can only recommend that you enter at your own risk. HTC has an explosive entry in the smartphone category with what its done on the software side… now it just needs the hardware to match.

The latest rewrite of the Web’s mother tongue won’t recommend the use of specific audio and video encoding formats that could make it cheaper and easier for people to distribute multimedia content.

The major browser makers have been unable to agree on an encoding format they will support in their products, wrote Ian Hickson, editor of the HTML 5 specification for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Plans have been discussed for years to incorporate two new tags — – <audio> and <video> — into HTML 5, the next specification under development. The original HTML specification never included those tags.

Because of that, people have to download plugins from various vendors to play audio and video content. If browsers support the audio and video tags, however, as well as a common encoding format, Web users wouldn’t have to use third-party applications for that content.

The browser would play the content natively, which makes Web development somewhat simpler and would not require users to download a raft of plugins.

But the issue of what codec to use has been a hot potato. The codecs likely to have been recommended would have been Ogg Vorbis for audio and Ogg Theora for video, both of which can be implemented without paying royalties unlike with other formats.

Supporters for the use of those formats argue that no one company should profit or hold the power over a particular codec, which could influence its development and use depending on a company’s business plans.

If browsers supported those codecs, Web developers could use open-source tools and encoders for those formats to put multimedia on their site for free, potentially striking a blow against vendors such as Adobe, Microsoft, RealNetworks and others that sell multimedia software tools.

Apple won’t support Ogg Theora in QuickTime, the company’s multimedia player, Hickson wrote. Apple has also expressed concern over patents associated with Ogg Theora. Even though the codec can be used royalty-free, Apple has been concerned that some party could make a claim if it ends up implemented in its products.

Opera and Mozilla oppose using the H.264 video compression standard for various reasons, including the cost of licensing the relevant patents as well distribution issues, Hickson wrote. Google uses H.264 and Ogg Theora in Chrome, but also has a problem in how it can distribute the browser through third parties due to licensing issues with H.264, he wrote. Microsoft hasn’t made a commitment to support the video tag, he wrote.

“After an inordinate amount of discussions, both in public and privately, on the situation regarding codecs for <video> and <audio> in HTML 5, I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that there is no suitable codec that all vendors are willing to implement and ship,” Hickson wrote.

“I have therefore removed the two subsections in the HTML 5 spec in which codecs would have been required, and have instead left the matter undefined, as has in the past been done with other features,” Hickson concluded.

Browser makers, however, can always make their own decision on what they want to support in their products. Mozilla’s latest browser, Firefox 3.5 which was released this week, supports the audio and video tags as well as the Ogg Theora and Ogg Vorbis codecs.

Thoughts on Opera Unite

Opera UniteI met today’s news about Opera’s new initiative — called Unite — with a mix of shock and awe.

On the one hand, I was sickened by the lack of analysis from the echolalic blogger news corps. It appeared that Opera PR had successfully reached out to all of them, shoved a news release down their throats and waited to give them the go-ahead to regurgitate it on their blogs, using the same screenshots, same content, and differing only in the pithiness of their post titles.

Of course, I could have gotten the same depth of analysis from half a dozen tweets.

Maybe they long ago wrote off Opera and aren’t interested in providing any kind of depth of insight but whatever, who knows — the nouveau press corps blew it. Social media proves its vapidity once again.

But, I digress. I’ll tell you what I think, since there’s a lot in the details of Opera’s announcement that bear inspection, even if I’m the only one to do it.

I’m going to talk about six topics:

What is Unite?

Like Flock before it (Disclaimer: okay, I’m just stroking my own ego here. Note to self: get over yourself), Opera is attempting to take advantage of the rise of social networking (the verb) and bake it into the browser, as a personal extension to one’s computing experience.

They accomplish this by embedding what amounts to a web server in the browser, and making it possible to share files, music and photos and to post notes or chat directly with your friends (or anyone who knows the URL to your account and in some cases, has the right password).

The Marketing Pitch

Opera Software

The marketing hype for Unite started recently, with a bright red page (above) hosted at opera.com/freedom. Of course this inspired a bit of buzz, and Kas Thomas from CMS Watch even guessed correctly what it was all about:

Folks, let me tell you what’s going to happen. I have a pretty strong hunch (but no inside info, I assure you) on this one. This is something I’ve thought about for years — it has needed to happen for years — and I’ll be thrilled if Opera pulls it off, although whether people will flock to adopt it is another question.

The answer is that Opera is going to embed a web server in itself.

When you fire up Opera, you’ll be operating a secure server and you will be able to serve all kinds of content (whatever you want, basically: bookmarks, contacts, cached content, arbitrary files from a roped-off area of your local storage, web pages of your own) to other Opera users, at the very least, and maybe all browser users, at the very most.

The mystery seems to have paid off, as Unite is topping Techmeme today.

They released a stylized video explaining Unite, remniscent of the Data Portability promotional video from several months ago:

What I find so fascinating about this marketing message is that it presumes that owning one’s own data and “connecting directly” with friends is somehow relevant to people — as though it’s a big problem that people have been complaining about for years, and that Opera has finally answered the call.

But I think they’re missing the big picture here — or intentionally obscuring it — which is that, while the idea of owning your own data may be attractive to neo-libertarians and open source geeks — most people really don’t care and are happy to outsource storage of their data to someone else who can be responsible for backing up their data and fending off hackers. 200 million Facebook users can’t be wrong, right?

People have embraced social networks because they make it easy to share and collaborate using the browser that they already have — and answering the question: “what do I do with all these stupid digital photos sitting idly on my harddrive?”

Let’s face it, bookmarks were pretty lame before we could peak over our friends’ shoulders at what they were reading.

So while Opera is right to seize on to the social networking meme, they’re doing so largely to increase the waning relevance of their browser — not to support freedom as they claim — especially at a time when Google’s Chrome and Apple’s Safari have entered the ring as the new twin contenders for the browser crown (even though no one knows what a “browser” is).

Furthermore, their whole pitch about owning your own data and disintermediating the large social networks will likely resonate much more with a European audience (i.e. one that would give 7.1% of their vote to the Pirate Party) than a mainstream, social network-obsessed American one.

If you consider how Lawrence Eng (Opera’s product analyst) puts Unite into context talking about “the Internet’s unfulfilled promise”, you’ll see what I mean:

Our computers are only dumb terminals connected to other computers (meaning servers) owned by other people — such as large corporations — who we depend upon to host our words, thoughts, and images. We depend on them to do it well and with our best interests at heart. We place our trust in these third parties, and we hope for the best, but as long as our own computers are not first class citizens on the Web, we are merely tenants, and hosting companies are the landlords of the Internet.

Social networking is important, but who owns it — the online real estate and all the content we share on it? How much control over our words, photos, and identities are we giving up by using someone else’s site for our personal information? How dependent have we become? I imagine that many of us would lose most of our personal contacts if our favorite Web mail services shut down without warning. Also, many of us maintain extensive friend networks on sites like MySpace and Facebook, and are, therefore, subject to their corporate decisions via “Terms of Service” and click-through agreements. Furthermore, what does it mean anyway to be connected to hundreds of our “closest” friends? What about our real social networks, the people we want to interact with on a regular basis (like once a week, or even every day)? Why are online solutions to help us with our real-world social needs so few and far between?

We are connected to a Web that has democratized much and is an amazing source of information. However, “the wisdom of the crowd,” along with the notion that our data ought to live on other people’s computers that we don’t control, has contributed to making the Internet more impersonal, anonymous, fragmented, and more about “the aggregate” than the individual. In fact, quite the opposite of the original promise. For too long, we’ve been going online to connect to each other, but sacrificing intimacy as a result.

With Opera Unite, I think we can start moving in a different direction.

Now, it might sound ironic coming from me that I think Opera was wrong to paint their pitch with the paint of libertarian ethos, but if they’re going to succeed, they have to go beyond “owning your own data” to talking about why owning your own data is better or easier. Philosophical rhetoric will only get you so far, as I’ve learned.

Speaking of…
Why isn’t Opera open source?

So, with all that raging neo-libertarian angst, why isn’t Opera open source?

Quite frankly, I have no fucking clue. And with Webkit giving everyone — including Mozilla — a run for dominance over the personal viewport to the web, I simply don’t see why anyone would build on the Opera platform (albeit, their platform is largely the web — though their rendering engine remains proprietary).

Could it be failure of imagination? Is it that Opera hasn’t figured out that the future of the web is in hosted and delegated services? Or, is it that they did figure that out, but desperately want to defeat that future in order to write an alternative future with their browser at its center?

In 2006, Opera didn’t see a business model for open source browsers. Little has changed since then, except that they now have three formidable open source challengers to contend with that have shipped “cloud services”: Mozilla Weave, Google’s Apps and Apple’s MobileMe.

So, although you can build widgets for Opera Unite, you’re still relying on a third party to stay in the room with you… namely, Opera. And Opera isn’t exactly an organization that has behaved favorably towards the open source community in the past. Though that seems unlikely to change, it still begs the question why they believe there is more value is staying proprietary than opening up their browser to outside contributors.

Still, regardless of the decision that they make for their business about open source, there’s a bigger elephant in the room that needs to be addressed:
Is Opera Unite really decentralized?

I call bullshit.

Opera Unite does indeed rely on a P2P-like network to function, but the big problem is that you must push all your traffic through Opera’s proxy service:

Not exactly “decentralized” (more on this in the next section).

Furthermore, if you read through the Opera Desktop End User License Agreement (which you had to if you installed the browser — shame on you if you didn’t!), you would have read section 7: USE OF SERVICES (emphasis mine):

What are the guidelines for approval of an Opera Unite Service?

These are some of the guidelines that apply to services:

* The service must have a sensible name and description
* The service must not have obvious bugs, so ensure that you test it before uploading
* The service must not contain malicious or destructive code
* The service must not contain or use copyrighted information for which you do not hold the rights
* The service must not contain or point to adult or hateful content
* The service should comply with the Opera Unite Service UI guidelines. Any reason for diverging significantly from the guidelines should be documented in the submission
* The service should serve standards-compliant HTML pages that are viewable in all modern browsers on a variety of devices.

I fail to see how this changes our reliance on “large corporations — who we depend upon to host our words, thoughts, and images” of whom Lawrence Eng spoke so disparagingly.
Owning Your Namespace

So, if it isn’t enough that you have to tunnel your connection through Opera’s proxies and place your service’s existence at the mercy of Opera’s filters, they also want to own your identity, something that everyone also wants to do lately.

In order to use Opera Unite, you have to have a my.opera.com account — perhaps not a big deal until you realize that you’ll be assigned a URL like http://notebook.username.operaunite.com/ to access your “self-hosted” outpost on the web.

Chris Mills, Opera’s Developer Relations Manager, explains:

To use Opera Unite Services, you need to log into Opera. This is the same login that you use to log in to My Opera, Dev Opera, or Opera Link.

Choosing an Opera Unite name for your computer

This name is basically your computer’s identity on the Opera Unite system — this is the URL that your contacts can go to if they want to make use of your Opera Unite Services, and share them with you.

So, while it’s true that your friends can access your Opera Unite homepage without an Opera account, if they want to host their own Unite server, they’re going to have to both download Opera and obtain an Opera account (and no, they don’t support OpenID).

While there are technical reasons that why this makes some sense (mostly to make it easier to get things up and running), it contradicts the whole promise of obviating central control. Indeed, AllPeers (now defunct) and others offered similar solutions previously. Why did Opera not launch with the ability for me to choose my own URL, or at least mask my homepage URL with something that didn’t tie me to Opera…? Oh yeah, that’s right — it’s all about owning the namespace.

At least Google was smart enough when they launched Wave to build in true decentralization from the start, and to choose a patent license for the Wave protocol that demonstrated that their desire was not to own the network, but to compete on it.
Unite & Activity Streams

Now, I know I sound like a curmudgeon, but I’m mostly just disappointed that few other people took Opera to task over the reality distortion field that Opera’s PR machine generated around this technology launch. But, as someone in the office said to me today, maybe no one cares enough about Opera to bother. Yeah, exactly, like I said before.

Still, there is a silver lining to this cloud computing fiasco which NO ONE else covered: Opera Unite supports activity streams!

It turns out that tucked within the Opera application is a directory called “unite” (on the Mac you can find it at Opera.app:Contents:Resources:unite) which contains a bunch of files with the .us extension (presumably for “Unite Service”). Like Mozilla .xpi files, these .us files are just zip files and can easily be decompressed by changing the extension.

In just about every bundle, there are several pertinent JavaScript files either in a folder called “asdstream” or with “activityStream” in the filename. The one that’s most interesting to me is the “activitystreamparser.js” file in the fridge.as bundle, which starts like this:

Now, I’m not sure how this is being used, but I imagine it’s being used to output updates on the personal homepage of the site… which is awesome.

I wish that Opera had reached out to the Activity Streams mailing list about this work, but I can also understand that they probably didn’t want to jump the hype stungun. Anyway, it’s a huge opportunity (in my eyes!) for them to join the discussion about the open social web (since they have been essential proponents of web standards on the open web to date) and I invite them to share their goals and ideas for this work.
Conclusion

Okay, so I shit all over Opera Unite, but you can’t come out and promise all kinds of world-changing, freedom-enhancing goodness and then not deliver! — worse, to do so when their newest competitor (Google!) is schooling everyone with the perfect example of how to do it right (see: Wave).

While I have problems with Opera’s marketing approach, I do think that it’s useful to have Unite in the marketplace so that I can point to it as an example of what I want to see happen with the Diso Project — though I’m not willing to rest my success on the fate of any particular browser.

Through a combination of technologies like OpenID, OAuth, XRD, Portable Contacts, Activity Streams and microformats, we’ve been moving in this direction for some time, without having to alter the browser. Of course that’s meant that the browser has been conspicuously missing from the conversation, but that too is changing (see Mozilla’s experiment baking OpenID into the browser with Weave), and with Unite, we have yet another vision to contemplate — though I would have loved to have seen Opera embrace more than just Activity Streams out of all the technologies from the Open Stack.

I’ll give Opera some credit — both for using Activity Streams instead of inventing their own protocol — and also for launching a fairly polished demonstration of Unite concept as an alpha. If they really want to offer transformative technologies, though, I think it’s critical that they align their business policies with their marketing rhetoric and technological objectives, down to the code level. Anything less will result in confusion and worse, more posts like this one!

Opera Unite makes serving data as simple and easy as browsing the Web. For consumers, Opera Unite services give greater control of private data and make it easy to share data with any device equipped with a modern Web browser.

For Web developers, Opera Unite services are based on the same open Web standards as Web sites today. This dramatically simplifies the complexity of authoring cutting-edge Web services. With Opera Unite, creating a full Web service is now as easy as coding a Web page.

Opera Unite is available in a special version of the Opera 10 desktop browser from Opera Labs. Opera Unite services run directly in the browser.
It is easy to use Opera Unite

1. Download the Opera Unite build from http://labs.opera.com/.
2. To start Opera Unite, click the Opera Unite logo in the lower left-hand corner of the browser and log in with your existing Opera ID — the same Opera ID used for other Opera services such as My Opera and Opera Link. Opera Unite will prompt you to register an Opera ID if you do not have one.
3. Now you are ready to use Opera Unite. Simply access your Opera Unite services from the Opera Unite panel of the browser. New services can be installed from http://unite.opera.com/.
4. Running a service will give you a direct Web address to the Opera Unite service on your device, for example: http://notebook.jondoe.operaunite.com/photo_sharing/, where “notebook” is the name of the local device serving content, “jondoe” is your username, and “photo_sharing” is the Web service being accessed. That link will also allow others to access the same Web service from your computer through their Web browser.
5. You may also see which friends are using Opera Unite services on your My Opera Unite home page.

Current Opera Unite services are as follows:

File Sharing

Securely share a file from your personal computer without waiting to upload it. First select the folder from which you would like to share files. Opera Unite then generates a direct URL to that folder. By giving that link to your friends, you can share files without routing through a third-party Web service.

Web Server

Run entire Web sites from your local computer with the Opera Unite Web Server. After selecting the folder containing your Web site, you can share and host it from the given Opera Unite URL. Opera Unite will automatically recognize index files and create the Web site as you designed it.

Media Player

Rock out wherever you are by accessing your MP3s and playlists from any machine. After selecting the folder containing your playlist, use the Opera Unite direct link to play your tracks directly in any modern Web browser.

Photo Sharing

Share your photos direct from your PC, without uploading them online. Once you select your photo folder, the photo-sharing service will create a thumbnail image gallery of your photos. Clicking the thumbnail will present the photo in its original resolution.

The Lounge

The Lounge is a self-contained chat service running on your computer. Your friends can access the chat room via the direct link, which will not require them to sign into any service. Depending on your privacy settings, you need only provide the generated password to your service in order for people to log in to your chatroom.

TechCrunch Tablet Update: Prototype B

It’s time for an update on the progress we’ve made on the low cost touch screen tablet that I first wrote about in July 2008 when I asked for a dead simple touch screen web tablet that boots right to the browser. Here’s our first post on the tablet, which we’re now calling the CrunchPad internally.

The idea is to get a new type of device into people’s hands for as cheap as possible (we were aiming for $200, it looks like $299 is more realistic). It fits perfectly on your lap while you are sitting in front of the TV, so you can look up stuff on Wikipedia or IMDB as you channel surf. It plays Flash video flawlessly so you can watch movies and TV shows on Hulu or Joost or wherever. Or listen to music on MySpace Music. Or use TokBox to have a video chat with your parents. Then check email and call it a day. Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Hulu, Wikipedia, Google Docs and Gmail are the killer apps for this device.

Because the device skips the resource-sucking parts of the operating system and focuses on one application – the browser – very low end hardware can be used and still give users a desktop-like Internet browsing experience.

We built a working but very humble Prototype A in August. It barely booted, but once it did it was a working touch screen web tablet built on very low end hardware. And when I surfed the web with it, I knew I wanted one that worked properly.

Since August a lot has happened. First, we now have a team lead – Louis Monier. Louis, formerly the founder/CTO of AltaVista (he is credited with building one of the first Internet search engines), has also spent time at eBay (head of the Advanced Technology Group), Google and Cuil. Louis left Cuil in the Fall and has been spending his spare time working with outside teams to build the new prototype. He’s in love with the project, and we’re lucky to get his time.

Second, we’ve completed Prototype B of the CrunchPad and are ready to show it to you. I include pictures and video to show it in action.

The device has a 12-inch touchscreen with a 4:3 aspect ratio (which is ideal for web browsing in my opinion). It is powered with a Via Nano processor, which has performed at par with the Intel Atom in our testing. 1 GB of ram (its more than we need) and a 4 GB flash drive to store the OS and browser and any cache. Resolution is 1024×768, which means the vast majority of websites are viewed in full width without scrolling. The device also has wifi, an accelerometer (so when you turn the screen on its side you can view more of a web page), a camera and a four cell battery. Total cost of the device, when we include estimates for the case, codecs and other miscellaneous items, is just over $200. Prototype B is actually much less expensive because the screen we used isn’t very good. The price estimate includes a much better, more expensive LCD.

The case, which was designed and built by David Yarnell and Greg Lalier from Dynacept, is 12.5? x 9.7? x 1.3?. It’s about twice as thick as is needs to be without further engineering – we just built in a safety thickness in case of heat or other issues. The device weighs three pounds, partially due to the extra batteries we’ve stuffed into it to see how long we can run it without power. Still, the device weighs in at 2 oz less than the 10? eeePC.

The software: currently we’re running a full install of Ubuntu Linux on the prototype with a custom Webkit browser. A lot of the work done to date has been on the drivers and the virtual keyboard, which you can see in the videos. The software has been created by Singapore-based Fusion Garage, who continue to work with Louis on the feature set and user experience.

What’s next?

We’ve completed our original goal of building a “dead simple and dirt cheap touch screen web tablet to surf the web.” The hardware is nearing lockdown. Software development is rolling. And we’ve spent very little money to get to this point.

We’ve received thousands of comments and emails from people who want this device right now. We’ve had tremendous support from the community in helping us build the prototypes, and Via has been flat out amazing with their support of the project.

We’ve also gotten quite a bit of interest from the investment community. The real question for us is whether this project has legs and should go forward towards production units, which is a very big step from a working prototype. That would require spinning the company off from the blog and building a team around Louis. It’s a decision we haven’t made yet.
